Alternative Education

We wish to contribute in mainstream development process - a view of Alternative Learning Centre at Baghmara village, Chakradharpur

Keeping in view incidences of regular drop-out of the school going children and their slow rate of retention, SMVM volunteers assessed needs of unreached community through need assessment study and gathered the information in a broader context of their socio-economic issues, demographic status and  current education patterns.

During field visits  for collection of household information, it was found that maximum number of children dropped out and engaged in some source of earnings to supplement housholds income. It was also found at some places that parents forced their children to engage in some income genration activity instead of attaining formal education.

Additionally, a few children never went to school owing to several reasons. These are mainly poverty, parents reluctancy towards education and addiction. Among all, a vast gender disparity in terms of education attaintment was also witnessed.

The apathy towards children detriorate their chance of future maintreaming in a development process, and hence, the project titled ‘alternative education’ was launched  in five villages of Chakradhrpur block of West Singhbhum district with the financial support of Jharkhand Education Project council, West Singhbhum district.

The project targets children in 6-14 years age. These children have been to a school. The duration of course is nine months. The children are taken into education center for 3-4 hours and taught diferent subjects for instance Hindi, Mathematics, English and EVS. Quality education is provided to children in a child friendly environment by adopting standard education pedogogy. As part of learning assessment of childern, tests are conducted and children securing good marks are awarded to boost up their confidence.

The organisation also makes an effort to mainstream  childern in a formal set up, so that they can complete their education on time and lead a successful life.
