Garbage collection in Chakradharpur
|
|
This project was supported by Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra with the financial support of India Canada Environment Facility, and implemented in the municipal area of Chakradharpur sub- division during period 2005-2007. After the cessation of the project in 2007, the activities are continuing on a self-sustainable mode.
Clean Environment Initiative is a Solid Waste Management Programme which seeks to improve the scenario of policy advocacy and field demonstration. The project covers eight slums in Chakradharpur. For the services rendered to the households, Rs 20 to 30 is collected from each household for meeting running costs and payment to safai mirtas (cleanliness friends).
Community mobilisation is the key to promote, scale up and replicate this paradigm to the unreached. To ensure active participation of key stakeholders with respect to smooth functioning of the programme, different approaches have been practiced and adopted. These included mass awareness through door step theme camps, rallies, road shows, puppetry, street plays, demonstrations, messages on cable television, messages in local dailies, cultural shows and SHG meetings.
Other important activities included dumping and disposal of solid waste management. This was done through community bins, lanes, storage points, capacity building of project team, PDC representatives, and community leaders.
This intervention elaborated successful model of public-private partnership. As a part of service delivery mechanism, the organisation offered services in various forms in marriage parties and other social get together.
Since 2007, the organisation is rendering service in the sub-divisional hospital, Chakradharpur, in the form of disposal of waste materials like needles and syringes, and also toilet cleaning.
