The project on Empowerment and Rehabilitation Programme for Spastic Children through providing education and vocational training is being supported by Social Welfare Secretariat, Department of Social, Child Development and Women Welfare, Jharkhand Government, since 2005. The project seeks to provide comprehensive support to the person with disabilities, especially spastic children, through providing basic education and vocational training.

Project Objectives

  1. To empower the disabled children, especially spastic children, by giving them an opportunity, so that they can lead life with dignity and provide them with choices to become the productive assets of the society.
  2. To provide them with all necessary facilities and also enhance their capabilities towards better quality of lives.
  3. To mainstream the children with special needs in development process.
  4. To ensure their rights and protection within the society and create a common platform to ensure their participation in all development process.

Strategies

Direct Services

  1. Community mobilisation and early detection
  2. Survey and check-up to find out the degree of disability
  3. Provision of resource support to schools
  4. Provision of aids and appliances to children and learning material
  5. Removal of architectural barriers in schools

Support Services

  1. Sensitising and training parents, teachers, community
  2. Provision of therapeutic interventions and counselling services
  3. Vocational education
  4. Adaptation in the evaluation system

Monitoring and Evaluation Services

  1. Assessing progress and providing improvement in the process by maintaining a strong Management Information System
  2. Monitoring and evaluation conducts by the external and internal evaluator, which gives a positive direction and feedback to strengthen to realize the project goal.

Major Achievements

  • Five spastic children have joined formal school during 2007-08
  • Vocational training is being provided to 20 spastic children after identifying their area of interest and slowly and gradually, they have started making products with fine shape
  • 30 spastic children participated in Olympic games, sponsored by Tata Steel, Jamshedpur
  • Tremendous improvement can be seen among spastic children with respect to communication skills, and other routine tasks. However, initially they were unable to undertake any tasks nor even communicate with others but today, they are able to convey and undertake tasks without taking helps of others.
  • Attitude, behaviours and perception change among spastic children, community members and parents can be seen.
  • 50 per cent spastic children have been provided disability certificate, callipers, wheel chair, etc.
  • 20 spastic children have participated in drawing competition organised by Gram Vikas Kendra, Jamsehdpur under National Environmental Awareness Campaign.
  • Health camp was organised in a school premises and around 50 spastic children undergone health check ups. Medicine was also distributed among spastic children.
